Mailboxes FAQ

2. Does Form 1583 need to be notarized?

Form 1583 from the United States Postal Service (USPS) needs to be notarized only if it is not signed in front of the Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) or mail center operator.

Notarization is not required if you choose to sign the form in front of a CMRA/mail center operator. This process is designed to verify your identity and ensure the security and legitimacy of the authorization.

You confirm your identity and validate the form by providing a government-issued photo ID, an Address ID, and other personal details, either to a notary public or directly to the CMRA/mail center operator. This step helps protect against fraud and ensures that only authorized individuals can access your mail. Once validated, the form grants the CMRA permission to receive and handle mail on your behalf, making it an essential part of setting up a private or virtual mailbox service.
